Green Gardening

Fall is right around the corner, and that means it’s prime time for growing many gardening favorites. Pumpkins, squash, cranberries, garlic, ginger, sweet potatoes, turnips, cornflowers, marigolds, petunias, violas, and pansies will all be in season as the weather becomes cooler. In addition to planting and growing locally, there are other sustainable gardening  practices that are easy to incorporate.

  • Compost your food waste and use the results as soil for your garden. (This will also save money on topsoil and means less trips to the store!)
  • Use mulch generated from raked leaves or local mulching services to cover the compost and protect and condition the soil.
  • Water your crops from sustainable sources, such as from a rain barrel or another rainwater capture system. You can also save water by only watering your plants at the root – the only place it’s really needed.
  • Use soil treatments, non-chemical pest prevention, and predatory insects (ex. praying mantis) to protect your plants from mites, slugs, and other pests.
  •  Harvest your food, saving enough seeds for next year’s plants and putting all the waste matter back in a compost bin where it will turn into compost, ready to use for next year!

  1. Nice tips. I wanna add one more. Group the plants according to their watering needs. Like the plants which need more water group them together and plants which need less water make them in separate group. This will overcome the underwater and over-water problem of plants and helps in saving water
