Clay’s Green Corner

Happy Earth Day! Or as we refer to it the real Mother’s Day. I’m sure wherever you are your organization, school, community is doing something to honor our home today. It wasn’t that long ago when Earth Day was regarded lightly; just an excuse for college age and other young folks to party, make some signs, and pick up  some litter. Earth day is still like that (there isn’t anything wrong with fun), but it so much more. Thanks to the efforts of concerned people across all racial, ethnic, and economic lines, businesses and other institutions became involved with celebrating Earth Day and turning that celebration into a day of service. Our planet gives us so much, we need to return the favor.

At the University of Rochester, the entire campus community comes together in the spirit of honoring something that is bigger than all of us. Check us out:

Some events we’re supporting/attending today are a tree planting ceremony, a tour of UR’s microfarm, seminars, a river clean-up by the Gandhi Institute, and if you have some time, stop by the Hirst Longe in Wilson Commons. There will be live music, vendors, face-painting and I’ll be there asking you all to take the Go Green pledge. This is our third Earth Day doing the pledge and the response as it is all year round is terrific. Here’s our page about the pledge: http://www.rochester.edu/sustainability/pledge/. Join us in committing to make a difference every day of the year.

Spring time is a time for renewal and feeling refreshed about the year ahead. I can’t think of a better way than celebrating Earth Day.
