Clay’s Corner

Judy ClayHola, terra firma stewards! Your humble blogger is quite excited because in a few days one of her favorite times of the year happens: Freshmen move-in!

On August 25, the University of Rochester school year officially kicks off with the arrival of the class of 2014. You know that feeling you get when that first beautiful, pleasant spring day arrives? Well, student move-in is the exact opposite. Joke! Meeting and greeting students, their parents, siblings and extended families is incredibly enjoyable. For those of us who have been in higher education for many years, nothing beats the enthusiasim and excitement of welcoming a new class.

At University Facilities and Services we celebrate by greeting each new student personally as they arrive for registration. We provide each student with a compact florescent bulb, information about recycling and sustainability, as well information on how we may better serve our newest customers. Fortunately developing and implementing the process of move-in is a well-planned event. You won’t be able to tell how many times we lose our minds. Why? Because we’re professionals!

Everyone at UR takes pride in being a part of move-in. From Residential Life to Information Technology to University Health Services, to Facilities we promise to make this huge transition a pleasant one. If you are part of the class of ’14, we can’t wait to meet you. Our time together is going to be a blast. Welcome.

Oh, a little hint for parents of the class of 2014: take everything you have bought for your child’s move-in and keep half of it at home. Really, they’ll be fine. Honest. They will only bring it back at Thanksgiving anyway. 🙂  Thank you family and friends of the Class of 2014. Be proud. You’ve earned it.
