Making Universities Greener
Local experts discuss how to implement sustainable operations on college campuses

The shared problems facing college administrators in incorporating sustainability in campus operations and the unique innovations being developed to solve these issues can provide significant insight on how to address sustainable implementation in the broader community.
Efforts being undertaken by local colleges and universities to solve campus sustainability issues will be the topic of the next Women and Sustainability lecture series, sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies.

The event will be held 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17 in the Gowen Room of Wilson Commons on the University of Rochester campus, and will include a panel discussion with campus sustainability coordinators from local universities.

“The problems inherent in addressing issues of waste generation, energy use and consumption on large college campuses provides significant opportunities to develop workable, cost effective innovations that can then be transferred for use in the broader community,” notes Callie Babbitt, a professor at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology and a member of the panel. “This event gives local colleges a chance to share information on best practices and promote current efforts to the public.”

The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the University Cluster in Interdisciplinary Studies, the Provost’s Office and the University Council on Sustainability.
