Coursera is offering an 8-week session on metadata beginning July 14 called Metadata: Organizing and Discovering Information. Increasingly I see formal coursework and degrees offered in data management. I’m taking this course in part to see how the instructor presents information, as I routinely need to present metadata concepts to the uninitiated. I already see gaps in what the course offers – nothing in the syllabus about governance or visualizing metadata. Some questions I want to answer in the course: Does the size of the data set influence the kind of metadata collected or published – are there different best practices for Big Data vs our student financial aid data? Are there any cost metrics – if you spend X providing actual data, should you be spending Y on metadata for that data?
