The Hartnett Gallery Presents: Toy Politics by George Lorio
September 8- September 25

ARTIST TALK: Thursday, September 8th at 4:00 P.M. in Gowen Room
OPENING RECEPTION: immediately following Artist Talk in gallery from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M.

Toy Politics exhibits a series of sculptures by George Lorio that poignantly comment on adult concerns in the guise of ironic constructions of found playthings. For the artist, toys are abstractions of grown-up possessions, professions, or spaces, which provide role models for children. Collage and assemblage synthesize the imagery. The subject matter’s focus shifts from the artist’s own life experience to broader topics, including the ambient drug wars, the desperation of immigrants, and threats to democracy due to endemic political corruption. Hartnett gallery invites you join the discussions and contemplate the growing racial division, wealth inequality, and environmental decline in our own nation.
