From the Artist Statement

Productive Frustration is an exhibit comprised of six videos and a photo installation, specifically designed for the Hartnett Gallery. The title is inspired by an interview with the Lebanese artist Jayce Salloum in which he discusses the motivations and disappointments of artists who live and work in politically unstable zones. Taking Salloum’s comments as my point of departure, and considering my own limitations as a contemporary Iranian artist, my work represents the everyday struggle to be creatively productive in an exasperating cultural situation.

The installation is comprised of grainy and pixelated images, each a still from one of my films. Together, the snapshots narratively connect the videos even as they autonomously forge their own story. Digitally magnified and printed, the images mostly incorporate the over-exposed film frames that are conventionally considered “burned” and are therefore regularly cut out of professionally edited films.

Born in Tehran, Tara Najd Ahmadi has a MA in Motion Picture Directing and an MFA in Time-Based Media. She is currently pursuing her PhD in the Program in Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester. She has received awards including the Norman Art Council’s Individual Artist Award (2011), the Madeline Collaborate Fellowship (2009 to 2012) and the 2009 OVAC Momentum Spotlight Honorarium. Tara has exhibited in Tehran, Croatia, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Paris, Tucson, Minnesota, Albuquerque, Oklahoma and Kansas City.
