Inspired by the ubiquity of social media and the many personas our data produces, this exhibition brings you, the viewer/user, into dialogue with AM, a fictional character created from data debris.

The Projected Relation is the relational space between AM and the viewer/user who interacts with her. As a viewer/user, you’re invited to speak with AM using emojis on a web-based application, available on the iPod in the installation. She’ll speak back to you in English, with an option for Spanish subtitles. In dialogue with AM, you’ll cover themes of virtuality and physicality, identity and the image, and place and ideology. Depending on how you respond, AM will move between her SHIFTs, presenting slightly different narratives.

Christina Smiros (1993, New York) is a video and systems artist based in New York. Smiros’ work explores intersubjectivity and interpersonal relationships in technophilic societies through storytelling. She holds a Masters of Fine Art in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art, a Masters of Science in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University, and Bachelors in Studio Art and Neuroscience from the University of Rochester.

The opening reception will take place on Thursday, September 13, with an artist talk in the gallery at 4:00 PM. The exhibit will remain on view through October 7.
