A New Semester Begins

Welcome back students, staff, and faculty!

I’d like to introduce myself – Kaitlin – the new Program Assistant at SBAI. Please make sure to stop by our office at Lattimore 538 to introduce yourself and say hello. I was thrilled to start working at the University in July and look forward to carrying over the communications and Gender and Women’s Studies work that I was doing previously in the non-profit sector.

But, enough about me and on to the really exciting stuff: we’re looking forward to spending our 25th Anniversary year with you and we’ve got many insightful and interesting events planned for the 2011-2012 academic year. The past two weeks have been ripe with anticipation for the fall semester and we can’t wait for you to enjoy our programming.

We kick off the semester with an opening reception on September 8th for our library exhibit honoring SBAI’s 25th Anniversary. The event includes a fascinating lecture from University Vice President Paul Burgett on “The Story of Women at the University and Susan B. Anthony’s Legacy.” In November we will be presenting the 35th Annual Janet Heidinger Kafka Award. This year we also look forward to our first annual Rainbow Lecture to be given by Yale Law Professor William Eskridge, Jr. during LGBTQI Awareness Month in April.

And, finally: what would a new school year be without some free food and good conversation? If you’re an undergraduate student interested or already involved in Gender and Women’s Studies, please come to our Welcome Back Dinner on Wednesday, September 14th at 5:30pm in Lattimore 540. If you’re a graduate student, we welcome you to our Graduate Lunch on Friday, September 15th at 12:00pm, also in Lattimore 540. Please RSVP by 9/9 for undergraduates and 9/12 for graduates by emailing us at sbai@rochester.edu or calling 275-8318.
