A Visitor’s Experience: The Gallery Store at the Memorial Art Gallery

By Julie Shin, University of Rochester student

Coming back from study abroad in London and traveling all through Europe I thought nothing could compare to Tate Britain, Tate Modern, the Louvre, and all of the little art galleries I discovered there. But upon reentering the MAG I realized the reasons why I come here every so often to unwind and enjoy a day of peace. But even more spectacular than the museum and all of its wondrous art collection is the little museum gallery store. Remembering my favorite part of museum visits as a child was the gift shop at the end, I can relive this excitement at the gallery store.
Beyond just the replica art pieces and glass vases, there are things to be discovered for every parent and child. Whether it is origami paper from Japan or children’s books from Kenya, the world can be found and explored in this small gallery store. Handcrafted puppets, cards, and jewelry pieces can be purchased for enjoyment or as a collection piece. Something new can be found, enjoyed, and purchased every time. The MAG is different from other art galleries because it caters to a broad audience, not only the sophisticates and art connoisseurs, but more so to the rest of the public.
All purchases made at The Gallery Store help support educational programming at the Memorial Art Gallery. Memorial Art Gallery members receive 10% off Gallery Store purchases.
Gallery Store Hours:
Tuesday-Saturday 10 am-5 pm and until 9 pm Thursday; Sunday 11 am-5 pm. 585-276-9010.
