New this year at the Fine Craft Show & Sale

There are eight different components or craft materials that are utilized this year in the Fine Craft Show & Sale. You will find works created in wood, ceramics, paper, leather, jewelry, fiber, wearable art and glass – or combinations of a few of these elements.

New this year to the Show is Ithaca glass artist Margaret Neher. This is a portion of her artist statement from her website:

“I’m fascinated by the endless variety of shapes and colors found in nature, and in orchids in particular. At the same time, I find myself frustrated by their ephemeral nature; how rare and fleeting they are. I think this is why I’ve always been drawn to realism in my work; to the challenge of working to capture a complex, ever-changing living thing in an unchanging form. Lampworked glass is particularly suited to this. The fluidity of the process allows the piece to keep evolving; each time I reproduce a given flower it becomes more realistic as my understanding of it grows more fully.”

She was recently interviewed by The Arts Business Institute about her inspiration and her business.

“MN: The idea is of botanical illustration in glass; like a technical drawing but three dimensional. I did the first two for a local show sponsored by the Fingerlakes Native Plant Society, and they were recently shown at the Cornell Plantations.”

The photo below was borrowed from that post. Read the full interview, here.

Very nice and facinating piece of flamedworked glass by Margaret Neher. There are high resolution pictures in the link mentioned. Details are fabulous. Dale Chihuly has serious competition!
