Turning 100 and celebrating at the MAG

A little bird just told us that Dr. Morris J. Shapiro will be having his birthday celebration at MAG this weekend. Sure, the Memorial Art Gallery is a great place to hold all kinds of events – just this past few weeks we’ve held our big Centennial Gala,  a re-dedication of the Museum, Baroque Organ concerts, 2 conferences, several meetings, Tapas with Max at the Gallery, there’s a lecture tonight on creating holograms, and oh, yes – our 100th Birthday Party! So what makes this one event so special to us? Dr. Shapiro will also be turning 100!

We did a bit of research and learned that he celebrated his 99th birthday at the UofR’s Helen Wood Hall. Read more here. Here is an excerpt borrowed from the UofR’s website:

Dr. Shapiro“Shapiro came back to Rochester and worked at Rochester General, Genesee and Strong Memorial hospitals. He served as a general surgeon in the URMC Department of Surgery until his “retirement” 29 years ago, when he began work in Emergency Medicine.

At 99, Shapiro is pleased to be able to continue working in the medical field. “It keeps me going,” he said. “I love the challenge, I love the students, and I love everything about medicine.”

Here’s wishing Dr. Shapiro a very Happy Birthday from all of us at the Memorial Art Gallery.
