MAG Preparator, Inspired by Current MAG Exhibition, Tries Gouache
By Carol Acquilano, Preparator
I just can’t think of a thing to say about gouache. I have used my new set a couple times and am struggling. Obviously, I haven’t mastered the medium – it is out of my comfort zone! Watercolor and acrylics are my typical mediums where I can glaze and scumble around.
Gouache is crazy – flat and opaque. Maybe I don’t like it. Maybe it’s the paper – handmade – a very rough mossy green Khadi? It doesn’t flow well and I can’t seem to control it. They look sloppy and crude, not at all my intention.

But when I look at Maira’s work, I get inspired all over again. Her colors are vivid and fanciful, beautifully rendered. The attention to detail, no matter how wacky, makes them so engaging. I might even say charming. Maybe if I use a hot press paper my results will be more favorable. Not that I want my work to look like hers….

I love that you are using gouache! It is such a revelation to me that someone with abilities and knowledge that I admire so much could possibly have a moment of struggle. It’s that whole process thing and getting out of our comfort zones. I’m feeling foreign and awkward with oil! Ha! OT Linwood was beautiful – Thanks!
