Meet the Artist: Carol Acquilano

Art Reflected: The Inspiration of 100 Years is a show and sale featuring some of the region’s best known contemporary artists. Over seventy artists were invited to create works that reinterpret objects in the MAG collection. These new works will be on view on the Gallery’s walls side by side with their sources of inspiration.

Visit our previous posts to meet other artists and learn more about this Centennial exhibit and Opening Party.  The Opening Party will be held on February 9th and will include a reception with the artists followed by dinner and the opportunity to view these new works before the exhibit is open to the public.

Carol Acquilano inspired by Braque

Carol Acquilano
Title: Words to a Song (left)
Medium: Sumi ink on paper
Inspired by Georges Braque, Still Life with Pipe (right)

Bio:
Carol is a graduate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, and is a Board Member of the Print Club of Rochester. She maintains a studio at Anderson Alley. An art teacher at SUNY Empire State College, Carol has also been part of the curatorial department of the Memorial Art Gallery since 1990.

Inspiration:
During the past three years, Cubism has captured my imagination. My quest to understand it’s mystery has led me to discover Braque and many other revolutionary painters. Their way of looking, and thus reflecting the natural world that gave way to a different kind of reality, one that magnified the inexactness and multiplicity of the visual experience. For me, this influences my way of working that embraces abstraction through intuition and imagination. The fundamental lesson is strength of composition and movement, the voices from 100 years ago reminding me that … it is always about the painting.

Carol’s work is available in the Gallery Store and she is also the creator of our 2012 Patron Print.
