Rochester City School District Students Film Documentary at MAG

by Richard DellaCosta, School of Imaging and Information Technology at Edison Tech Media Instructor

Magic City, a documentary DVD produced by students from Rochester City School District’s School of Imaging and Information Technology at Edison Tech High School is an incredible journey that began as a high school senior project. Rochester, New York is endowed with important and beautiful cultural institutions: The George Eastman House, Memorial Art Gallery, The Rochester Museum and Science Center and Strong National Museum of Play.

coffins2Our goal for the Magic City project is to raise awareness and pique interest of others to visit, explore and experience these amazing institutions, which are so close to home, yet too often untapped. The students of The School of Imaging and Information Technology (IIT) were allowed in with their cameras. Many eyes were opened to completely new worlds and discoveries found right in our students’ own back yard. By distributing this video to schools and community organizations within the greater Rochester area, IIT will enhance the experience for others. In some small way, IIT will be responsible in promoting the continued existence of these important institutions.

The students learned how to use a potter’s wheel and how to glaze and fire finished pieces. Harp felt the experience was a positive one, “The students were very professional. They enjoyed being on the wheel. Pieces will be fired and returned to them. They were thrilled.”

A formal premiere of Magic City will take place at WXXI Studios, Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 pm.
