Fringe Festival Events at the MAG

Have you heard the buzz around Rochester? The first annual Rochester Fringe Festival is going on – right now – all around the town.

Watch a video clip (thanks to WXXI) of last night’s performance with Project Bandaloop, on the HSBC Plaza:

At the Memorial Art Gallery, we’re not dropping down buildings, but we  are partnering with the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester City Ballet for an afternoon of the Renaissance ~ Remix-ed.

Wondering just what that means?  Here are some details:

Saturday, September 22, noon to 4 pm

In the Creative Workshop:
Get a Handle on Heraldry
(drop in, Noon – 3:30pm)
Do you know azure from argent? Bone up on blazonry basics by designing your own coat of arms.

In the Vanden Brul Pavilion:
Mini-lesson in Renaissance Dance
(1 & 2:30pm)
Need to practice your pavane? Want to work on your galliard? Join dancers from the Rochester City Ballet to learn steps from popular 16th-century dances.

Coloring Fashions:
(drop in, Noon – 3:30pm)
Take a coloring break; sit in the peaceful Pavilion and add some color to fashionable Renaissance characters.

In the Gill Discovery Center:
(entry every 30 minutes to limited numbers)
Explore the MAG’s newest interactive installation, Renaissance Remix: Art & Imagination in 16th-century Europe.
Have a question? Ask MAG Educator Sydney Greaves.

In the Green Room:
“A Tale of Wisdom & Courage”
(1:30 & 3pm)
Enjoy the story of The Philosopher’s Stone by Dr. Win Wenger, told by dancers from the Rochester City Ballet. Between stories, browse in our small book selection or play a Renaissance Art card game.

In the Fountain Court:
Improvisational Dance to Renaissance Music
(12:30, 2 & 3:30pm)
Revel in a performance by Rochester City Ballet dancers as they “remix” 21st-century and 16th-century dance moves. Accompanied by Renaissance music on the Italian Baroque Organ, provided by organists from the Eastman School of Music.

Interactive Organ Demonstrations
(12, 1 & 2:30pm)
Between dances, learn about the mechanics behind the music of the Italian Baroque Organ. Organists from the Eastman School of Music will “pull out all the stops,” revealing anything from puffing bellows to twittering nightingales.

All activities are included with Gallery admission.

Looking for more kid friendly events at the MAG? The Creative Workshop is taking registrations for fall and winter classes right now. Children as young at 2½ can take a class along with their parent. We have one day Start With Art Workshops, Art Day School during winter break, classes for teens and tweens, seriously, something for everyone. And, as if that’s not enough, this is what’s going on for families for the rest of the year. Join us at the MAG for some serious fun.
