Wear Glass

By Colleen Griffin-Underhill, Gallery Store Manager

As the buyer for an art museum store, I am always looking for just the right items to connect our visitors experience inside the glass doors of our Gallery with something they can touch and take home and live with…or wear dangling from their ears!

When we discovered that this spring’s show, GlassWear from the MAD museum in NYC was coming I did a little dance…really…I stood up in my office and danced. The talented glass jewelry artists in Rochester are creating some of the most unique, wearable art that we sell. They also have a contagious excitement about what they are doing and their work is ever changing as they learn new techniques or combine new materials with glass.
lucinda-blues-detail-41 There is this lovely, serendipitous moment that happens in the Gallery Store when an artist stops in and by chance gets to meet an admirer and tell them all the details about the new necklace they are taking home in their shiny silver box. Why not let everyone meet them and for a few days fill a case with just their work? A trunk show (or six) seemed like the perfect way to showcase each artist and show the variety of work being made right here in our region. (And yes, it really is called a trunk show because each artist brings enough work to fill a trunk.)

Linda Lawrence will kick things off this Thursday evening when she opens her “trunk” of goodies. We are looking forward to spending time with these talented people, learning about their inspiration and artistic process and maybe model a few beaded baubles for our visitors along the way.

The GlassWear exhibit is truely amazing. I could spend hours pouring over each piece. I will certainly have to get in there again after my Trunk Show! Colleen and the entire staff in the Gallery shop have been wonderful to spend time with during my 3 day visit. I’ve enjoyed meeting all who have come thru the door and appreciate all that have stopped to view my work. Thanks a bunch!!
Smiles,
Linda
