Lecture: “Uncorking the Past”
Memorial Art Gallery

Thursday, March 31, 2011
7:00 PM

In “Uncorking the Past: the Archaeological and Chemical Hunt for the Origins of Viniculture,” Patrick McGovern tells the compelling story of humanity’s ingenious, intoxicating quest for the perfect drink. Dr. McGovern is scientific director of the Biomolecular Archaeology Laboratory for Cuisine, Fermented Beverages and Health at the University of Pennsylvania Museum, where he is also an adjunct professor of anthropology. Over the past two decades, he has pioneered the interdisciplinary field of biomolecular archaeology, which is yielding whole new chapters concerning our human ancestry, medical practice, and ancient cuisines and beverages. Following the lecture, he will sign copies of his new book, Uncorking the Past: The Quest for Wine, Beer, and Other Alcoholic Beverages, as well his award-winning, Ancient Wine: The Search for the Origins of Viniculture.

Cosponsored by the Memorial Art Gallery and the Archaeological Institute of America, Rochester Society, in conjunction with the exhibition, Wine and Spirit: Rituals, Remedies and Revelry. Free to MAG and AIA members; included in Half Price Thursday Night Gallery admission for all others.
