A Hidden Treasure

Charlotte Whitney Allen Library & Teacher Resource Center By Lu Harper, Art Librarian and Webmaster

Did you know that the Gallery has a Library? We do, and have had one since the Gallery opened in 1913! This little-known treasure, the Charlotte Whitney Allen Library & Teacher Resource Center, is located on the third floor of Gallery’s historic Cutler Union building.

Many museum libraries are available by appointment only and do not circulate their materials. However, because of the Gallery’s strong community focus, the Gallery’s library is open to the public and circulates materials to UR students, faculty & staff, Gallery members and area K-12 teachers.

With over 43,000 volumes, the Library’s collection covers world art, art education, art techniques, auction sales price information and museum studies. The Teacher Resource Center circulates visual materials for teachers to incorporate in K-12 instruction across the curriculum, including online lesson plans, posters, multimedia sets, and great children’s books. We coordinate with Education Department staff to advise teachers on how to make best use of the Gallery’s resources in the classroom.

The Library is also responsible for the Gallery’s archives, which documents Gallery history and the history of regional artists & arts organizations. We are in the process of indexing the Gallery’s publications and records of events by person/place/event in preparation for the Gallery’s centennial in 2013 and in the near future will be contributing digital images to a regional history website being developed by the Rochester Regional Library Council.
