Calling All Kid Curators! The MAG’s Case for Kids Needs Your Vote!

By Amelia Ann Titus, Creative Workshop Burne Gallery Intern

We bet your child has that special discerning eye– they love looking at new sculptures and artworks, pointing out their different qualities, textures, colors. Well then, Memorial Art Gallery’s Creative Workshop and Curatorial Department need your child’s help! We’re looking for your child’s vote for our Case for Kids. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to hone your child’s curatorial skills!

We recently announced this winter’s Case for Kids revolving exhibit in the Creative Workshop Fall/Winter brochure. It works very simply: children between the ages of 2 ½ to 15 grab an official ballot at the Creative Workshop front desk (or ask any Memorial Art Gallery employee for a copy).

Any child can circle or mark a favorite work out of the eleven provided and hand the ballot in to the Creative Workshop. Winning works will be showcased in the Case for Kids at the tour entrance of the Gallery which will be revealed on December 11th at the Creative Workshop’s Winter Open House.

Let’s take a quick look at some of this year’s contending works. Magnolia Grandiflora with Monarch Butterfly (1975), for instance, was crafted of hard porcelain. The thin, delicate petals of the flower blossom to reveal the rich monarch butterfly nestled within. Ceanna and Matt Anselm both voted for this work because they raised butterflies this past summer at their home and appreciated the work’s natural qualities.

Alexander Calder’s The Bronze S (1955) is constructed of steel, aluminum, and paint, and features three rounded disks suspended from a bronze base. Julianna Lisak, age 12, chose this work as her favorite: “I’m choosing [this work] because it is modern and beautiful and I like the sense of movement and flow.”

Whether your child is fascinated by flora or appreciates open-ended artistry, please encourage your child to check out the ballot form and vote by October 27th!
