Clothesline Festival – Come Rain or Shine!

By Rebekah Moraites, Visitor Services Representative

M&T Bank Clothesline Festival

One of things that consistently delights me about Rochester is our dedication to local artists. I have never lived anywhere before that cared so much about paying tribute to these wonderfully talented locals.

You probably won’t believe it, but I heard about the Clothesline Festival several years ago – when I lived in Owego, NY – two and a half hours away from Rochester, NY! Back then, I never thought that I would move to Rochester and get involved in the Clothesline festival. Isn’t it funny how things work out like that? Little did I know that the Clothesline Festival draws a crowd from all over the state of New York. You might not have known this either, but the Clothesline Festival only accepts artists from New York State.

Last year was my first time visiting the Clothesline Festival – and wow, I was impressed! There was so much to see, and I wanted one of everything! I was mesmerized by original artwork, paintings, jewelry, decorative pieces for your yard and home, pottery, wearable art, and more! Not only do I enjoy the time outside, but I feel good about supporting artists within New York State. It was a great way to spend the day with my family.

This year, I am even more excited to be a part of the Clothesline Festival.  If you haven’t been to the Clothesline Festival, there is a lot of fun around the Memorial Art Gallery. With a small admission fee – $5 ($4 for Members), you get access to hundreds of top artists, vendors, music, and food – AND this fee includes admission to view the collections within the Memorial Art Gallery! That is certainly a deal! Children 10 and under are free! I highly recommend it for a whole day of fun for the family.

The Gallery Store will have a side-walk sale booth set up in a new location this year – outside by the tour entrance. Expect to find deeply discounted merchandise – like cards, notebooks, and stationary from our past exhibits – an excellent way to grab something you weren’t able to get while the exhibit was on show! The store will also be previewing the 2011 Calendar. More Jewelry and t-shirts will be available in the store inside. Also, Memorial Art Gallery’s library will be featuring their annual art book sale.

Creative Workshop Open House

There will be an open house in the Creative Workshop from 11am-4pm on both Saturday and Sunday to showcase the art created by their Creative Workshop teachers and to inspire you to continue a passion in the arts or to try something new. You can enjoy artist demonstrations as well as learn about all of the classes offered year-round.

This is the time to celebrate what New York State has to offer. Come rain or shine to support artists in sharing their vision! 54 years and still going – you should come and be a part of history too!
