The Hidden Treasure

By Susan Callin, Gallery Council Member

Just like going to an estate sale or even a garage sale, shopping at the annual Art & Treasures sale requires imagination, fortitude and a little bit of luck. No one knows this better than Gallery Council member, Annette Coffey, who found one of the hidden treasures at last year’s sale. Let her story be an inspiration to you and motivation to shop this year’s sale!

IMG_1131-Annette's Iris pictureWhile volunteering at the 2009 Art & Treasures sale, Annette was immediately attracted to a still-life oil painting depicting a cluster of irises. Upon closer inspection, however, she noticed the painting had several flaws. It had no visible name or date. It was unframed, dirty, stained, torn in a few places and besieged by areas of cracked and crumbling paint. Annette decided the asking price of $150 was too high and walked away. Annette volunteered all three days at the sale. The sad little painting she had come to love remained unsold. On the last day of the sale, the painting was marked half price. Annette jumped at the chance to buy it and took it to her friend, Lanna Pejovic, a Honeoye Falls art restorer. For $250 Lanna repaired, cleaned, matted and framed the painting. Cleaning revealed the initials KDP and the date June, 1887, making the painting even more intriguing.

Today, the beautiful painting hangs in Annette’s home, next to a set of French doors, bringing a bit of the garden indoors. Annette is THRILLED with her art work, and is looking forward to more “treasure-hunting” again at this year’s sale. Hopefully, she’ll see YOU there too!
