PAPER SCULPTURE BY CHRIS K. PALMER

PAPER SCULPTURE BY CHRIS K. PALMER

This weekend I borrowed & watched a new acquisition in the Charlotte Whitney Allen Library–the DVD Between the Folds, which looks at the artists, scientists and educators who work in and with the folded universe of origami.  This award-winning documentary is about inspiration and epiphany, about exploring the limitations of medium and technique, about dedication to craft, about the unique and the ephemeral.  It is also about connection and transformation, about the tangible and the intangible, about the simplicity and complexity at the heart of all living things.  Of particular interest to educators will be the section about an Israeli initiative to teach math using origami in the elementary classroom.  My favorite quote, from origami theorist Erik Demaine: “When I put a crease in it I’m essentially changing the memory of the paper.”
